Predominantly our first thought when we hear the word kitchen – is food and what is wrong with that? The main purpose of the kitchen is, after all, the preparation of food, but in the modern age we use our kitchens for much more than just cooking.
Why use a room for only one purpose when it can suit multiple? Whilst some uses of the kitchen are more original than others, we can all learn from the following ulterior activities that we can engage in when in our kitchen.
Quality time with the Kids
Not only can you have more time with the children when you invite them to help you in the kitchen, you can benefit their education. Cooking can be a great way to build on children’s mathematical skills. From measuring to judging volume, all these skills will be useful for your kids to learn – they won’t even be aware that they’re being educated as they cook. And when it comes to the cleaning up you’ll have an extra pair of hands.
Social Space
Who said that the kitchen can’t be a great place to hang out? No matter what your age, the kitchen can be a great place to accommodate your friends and family. If you’re hosting a dinner party, you can socialise as you cook. If you’re holding a house party, you can entertain in the kitchen without the fear of any wine getting on the carpet! A group of friends situated in a room full of food? Truly a match made in heaven.
Up your Cooking Skills
A more obvious benefit that comes from being in the kitchen more. You will undoubtedly feel more compelled to try and cook something delicious. No skills (including the culinary kind) come without practice. So by persisting in your cooking efforts you will be sure to improve and conjure up some fabulous dishes. Start small with some simple recipes and progress slowly to the more advanced meal ideas. Before long, you’ll find it hard to leave the kitchen.
Get Creative
You can do more in your kitchen than simply cook. By getting creative in other ways, you’ll be sure to satisfy more than just your food palette. From organic face masks to anti-wrinkle cream you can create your own beauty products in the comforts of your kitchen and make your skin feel beautiful and fresh without the price tag. No chemicals, no clinical smelling products – just natural ingredients and a whole lot of fun!
Get Healthier
Believe it or not, but you can actually lose weight by spending more time in the kitchen. The greatest benefit of being within your own kitchen when you’re hungry is that you can choose what’s in it. All those tempting junk foods that make your mouth water – remove them from the shelves. You can’t consume what you don’t have. Instead, place pre-cut and washed fruit in Tupperware around the kitchen. They’ll be the first thing you see when you enter feeling peckish. What’s more, it can be a great place to put the treadmill!
Give a little more of your time to the kitchen this year. No room in the house should be neglected, least of all one that can bring so many additional benefits than just a scrumptious meal. Getting the most out of your kitchen as a social area may entail having to think about how the space works in its current state. Can you clear it out and utilise it better by simply giving it a good clear out or are you going to have to start thinking about kitchen design and something radically different?
Do you have any other kitchen activities to contribute? Let’s help each other make the most out of our kitchens this year!
