Amid all the hectic activity on your moving day, you may be keeping an eye on certain boxes you’ve packed, sealed and labeled. It’s imperative to keep them away from anything that might fall on them. And you’re probably making sure, short of outright threats, that no one sets anything on top of the boxes so they aren’t crushed. Even the way they’re placed inside the moving truck or in your car is important as you don’t want any damage to befall them.
Of course, the contents inside are the reason for this special care and all the fuss might be because they’re something important that can’t be replaced. Perhaps it’s framed artwork or sculptures or even a crate of precious vinyl albums. Or it may be a box of Christmas decorations that have been a part of the family tradition for years. Whatever the case, your treasures require some extra attention when it comes to packing and transportation on moving day.
Here we’ll offer some tips on how to make the transition from an old house or apartment to your new digs without suffering any damage to your holiday belongings.
Packing tips for Christmas stuff
Just as staying organized throughout a move is helpful, keeping your holiday gear organized can be a good way of keeping the most fragile things together, whereas you can handle other less vulnerable items separately. This may entail repackaging certain pieces and finding new ways to store them. Making a trip to the closest home/office supply store may be in order, where you can pick up all the supplies you need, such as some containers for your decorations and ornaments.
Yet before you begin packing decorations for your trip, you should take the time to give everything a once-over in case they need a thorough cleaning. This may consist of simply wiping the dust off them or using a cleaning solution on glass or metal pieces. You might also check to make sure they haven’t been damaged by humidity or pests.
When packing these fragile pieces, you should wrap them in tissue paper and keep them in a sturdy box, possibly with individual compartments for each ornament, similar to a carrier for wine glasses. You may even try wrapping them in newspaper, handkerchiefs or hand towels, anything that will keep them from being jostled around during a ride in the car or truck. You should also keep them away from moisture and extreme temperatures.
Mixing the old with the new
As you prepare to move, you may find certain items beginning to show their age. It may be time to leave certain things behind and find some new replacements. The old artificial tree you’ve been using for a while is starting to get raggedy and the string of lights you’ve been using is losing more bulbs each year. A solution may be to pick up a prelit Christmas tree that would save you some effort when it comes time to decorate when the season begins (plus, purchasing one in the offseason will save you money during the holidays).
Getting everything there safely
Moving can be a huge undertaking, and being organized will help the whole process and make unpacking a lot easier. It’s also good to make sure that anything fragile or easily breakable is handled carefully and packed securely. Then, when it comes around to your first Christmas in your new place, you’ll be able to enjoy all the decorations you’ve had as part of your past traditions and possibly use them along with the brand-new decorations you’ve decided to pick up. It will all make your holiday celebrations that much more enjoyable, especially after having a successful and damage-free move from your old place.
